Students who showcase themselves through personalized journals. I am a 1st grade teacher with a significant number of ESOL students and some students with special learning accommodations. I try to engage all my students by providing projects/lessons that will inspire Novelty and Variety, and Choice.

Students love telling things about themselves and families. I have created a project we do at the beginning of the year and at the end of the year to showcase each student's personality, likes, star qualities and new things learned. Some of my students are unable to purchase needed supplies for this specialized project "All About Me", and feel they cannot participate to the same level.

The resources needed are simple supplies to personalize an "All About Me" journal; crayons, markers, scissors, fun stickers, etc. The students create their first draft of this project in the beginning of the year. It enables other students to get to know their fellow classmates, and allows the presenting student to take pride in their culture, family, activities, etc. The journals are colorful, fun displays of each individual child. The resources requested will help to "add color" to the project. At the end of the year the students review their first draft "All About Me" projects and make changes. They tell what they learned, what the liked, what they didn't like, and write letters to my next year student's explaining their first grade experience. This is a fun project with a lot of learning potential. It also does wonders to boost individual self esteem.
