Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Learning two languages can be fun! I teach first grade in a dual language, low income school in Connecticut. My students have the opportunity to become fluent readers and writers in English and Spanish.

The children in my class are trying to become fluent readers in both their dominant language and a second language. They do not have a listening center with a variety of grade level texts so that they can be exposed to the sound of the two languages.

If my students had a listening center, they could spend time listening to how their dominant language and secondary language sounds. This will develop not only their listening skills but their oral language skills as well. With an increase in their oral language skills, this will enable them to become better readers. Having a variety of texts to read along with will give them the opportunity to be exposed to different genres of stories.

Your help will ensure my students the opportunity to work on becoming better listeners, speakers, and also the chance to become fully literate in two languages.
