With the ever increasing technological capabilities of our global society, computer literacy is becoming an essential skill for the next generation of young citizens. The fourth grade boys and girls I teach come from a predominately blue collar, working class community. Our school-wide Title One Program signifies that at least forty percent of the student population comes from low-income families. Therefore, most of our children do not have access to many technological opportunities. Small schools such as ours, generate limited funding through local, district, and state resources.

I believe children everywhere deserve the right to develop the skills necessary to become the next generation of global thinkers and leaders. Ideas and realities to change the world will come from the fourth grade students I teach today. My desire is to place my students from the rural region of the Appalachian Mountains on a level playing field with youngsters across the globe. Help me provide educational and technological tools that will engage my boys and girls, encourage them to participate and interact, and improve education not only in our community, but communities around the world.

There are many variables that factor into student retention of information. Recent studies on Interactive Whiteboards and LCD Projectors used in education have shown that a student’s ability to retain and recall information has increased two-fold. Lessons are more memorable because students are more engaged and motivated. Different learning styles are accommodated when learning is delivered with these technological tools. A new dimension will be added to my curriculum as a result of an Interactive Whiteboard and a LCD Projector. The LCD Projector will connect to our desktop computer, allowing the computer’s screen to be projected on the Interactive Whiteboard for the entire class to view. I will be able to teach endless concepts in mathematics, reading, writing, science, social studies, and health, enhancing each and every lesson with a visual component (a map, an equation, a diagram, a sentence or paragraph, onscreen notes, or a video segment). Student participants will be “jumping out” of their seats willing to manipulate objects on the whiteboard screen. Technology will enable my students to explore information that involves student collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking.
