I teach 3rd grade in a large Schoolwide Title I minority school. Classes are made up of children from low-income families. With this socioeconomic makeup, these children are considered high risk for achievement. I also have a large number of special education students in our regular education classrooms.

Because of the makeup of our student population, parents show little to no interest in the day to day schoolwork of their children. These children have a hard time staying organized and getting information home to their parents. The MOOSE Binders help our students get organized so that when they get home and there isn't anyone to help them, they still know what they need to do.

We need binders and sheet protectors to help us build our communication/student organization system. These notebooks are a way to organize the things we need to send home on a weekly basis. Each child will receive a binder. Within each binder clear plastic protector sheets will be inserted. Each sheet will be labeled for different purposes. For example, Daily Homework, Reading, Signed Papers, etc. Our parents would be given an orientation on how to use these binders at the beginning of the year.

Your help with this project would ensure that our students become self motivated and better organized. In learning this skill, even at such a young age, I feel it will carry through with them to further grade levels. With these binders parents will not be able to say "I didn't know." Students will be able to say "I did it on my own!"
