My students need 16 books by the author Chris Van Allsburg to participate in a vocabulary based author study.

Vocabulary learning is essential to the development of well-rounded readers. I teach first grade with a focus on a balanced literacy program.

I firmly believe in strategic vocabulary development and rich literature selections within the classroom as important components to creating life-long readers. I recently am completing an action research project as part of a Reading Credential/ Master's Degree program in my classroom that focuses on the expressive vocabulary development of my students. I use an author's study of Chris Van Allsburg literature as the medium for introducing rich vocabulary within an engaging setting. The results of the project are promising, with my students showing a significant increase in expressive vocabulary abilities on a pre-post assessment comparison. Most importantly, my students are very engaged in the literature during instruction and discussion, and often ask to read the Chris Van Allsburg books during independent reading time. My students gain not only vocabulary skills, but also a love for literature through this project.

This author's study/vocabulary project is showing to be so successful that I am determined to implement it into my permanent curriculum plan. For this project I have been using the public library as my main book resource, which requires that I continually check out and recheck out the Chris Van Allsburg literature. Next year I would like to expand on this project, by turning it into a two month author/vocabulary study. It would be beneficial if my students could have the full library of Chris Van Allsburg selections available through the entire duration of the author's study and throughout the school year. This is not a possibility through using the public library as my main resource.
