Daily News in Kindergarten and First Grade

My students need 30 tablets of ruled chart paper to learn to write our morning message, daily news, poems and songs using upper case and lower case letters.

We are a French-English dual language Kindergarten classroom. Our school provides a bilingual education for free to French-speaking and English-speaking students. 2007-2008 is the first year of the dual language program and it will grow year after year, adding on one or two classes.

Students in Kindergarten learn to read and write. We use large chart paper to model how to write in Kindergarten. Large chart paper allows us to write in large print using our two colors: green for French and black for English. This year, we went through 10 tablets in French and 5 in English. Next year, as we expand the program, we anticipate to double our consumption of chart paper.

Learning to identify and differentiate upper case letters from lower case letters is a starting block for a strong literacy program. Large chart tablets allow us to show students how we want them to write. It also gives children a chance to practice writing thanks to the lined paper. The bold lines guide them in writing in upper case and the dotted line helps them write lower case letters.
