I teach Talented Art in a rural community in Louisiana and some of my students are still struggling from losses during Hurricane Katrina since many new students moved to our community after the storm to make new lives. I am always looking for ways to make a difference in our community while teaching basic drawing, painting and photography skills. I go to a number of different high schools in our Parish (its like a county in other states) and I was fortunate to receive a Donor's Choose Grant previously for one of my high schools. I would love to extend the photography projects to one of my other high schools. Our community has many tourist type attractions such as the Manchac Swamp. Louisiana is losing its wetlands at an alarming rate and taking photos gives the students a sense of awe and the importance of preserving the images for posterity. If we had a nice photo printer, plenty of ink and photo paper, we could turn our photos into fine art prints that could become a permanent display at our local tourist bureau. I have spoken to the director and she is very excited about this project. With the previous grant, we were able to take photos of dogs and cats at the animal shelter, using Photoshop, we created images that were then projected onto large sheets of plywood, painted and the student artworks are now permanently installed in the animal shelter. Having the equipment and supplies to create a meaningful learning experience for my students is my goal. Being able to share their talents with the community has added so much more to their education, by adding service they understand the meaning of giving of oneself to the greater good. Thank you for helping our dreams become a reality.
