Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a Kindergarten through Sixth Grade Music Teacher. My students live in a high need community where things available to students in other districts are not readily available.

My students love music class. They are engaged making music as much as possible and have a great thirst for learning and exploring new concepts and ideas. At this time I have a very large, non carpeted classroom. The chairs I have are too large for my small kindergarten and first grade students to sit on correctly. In addition, there are many times I do activities with older students where we need to sit on the floor. The floor is cold and hard. The students need a specific area to be able to sit on the floor in my room that will allow them to focus more on what they are learning than on where they are sitting. My students also don't have many opportunities to play the Orff Instruments that we have because we don't have the proper mallets. We only have two sets of mismatched mallets for six instruments and those are falling apart and will damage the instruments. Older students are also limited in playing correctly on the smaller instruments because the instruments are played sitting on the floor. They can't sit up straight and use correct technique because they are bending over to play the instrument.

To help maintain focus on learning in music my students need a carpet in the classroom that they can sit on. A music themed carpet will also help to inspire greater music related questions and thought. Specially designated areas allow for my students to feel a stronger sense of order as well as a feeling of belonging where they are. My classes also need six sets of mallets, three each for xylophone and metallophone. This will allow more students to play at any given time and allow for increased musicality as well as maintain the instruments in good condition. Two Orff Instrument Stands will enable my older students to use the soprano xylophone and metallophone correctly with good technique. They will no longer be disadvantaged when playing the smaller instruments.

By having the proper supplies we are able to use the instruments in a way that will allow their usage in years to come by many more classes.
