The Play's the Thing: Lullaby of Broadway 2008-2009

My students need a class trip to see the Broadway play "Wicked" and participate in a Broadway classroom workshop; this includes lunch at Planet Hollywood and transportation.

I teach fifth grade students in a Title I free lunch eligible school. Ours is an immigrant population in a high need community and this activity is one that is not financially accessible to our families. Broadway is part of the American dream to which the parents of our students aspire. We teach literacy but this is the way to make it come to life. "Wicked" is a show that takes the "Wizard of Oz" and gives you the witch's perspective. It's a splendid example of perspective and point of view. Wouldn't it be wonderful to provide this otherwise unreachable experience to bring the power of the theater to these children? The arts are often the "expendable luxury" that is so desperately needed for these students. This would truly give "voice" to screenplay and students. Bringing Broadway to these children is to provide the experience of a lifetime and perhaps to reach the children in a way that might transform lives.

These students have been identified as gifted and talented in a high needs often at risk population. It is our mission to provide both education and the experiences that would otherwise be unavailable and Broadway is the legend of dreams. We teach literacy, and what better way to bring that to life than theater? This particular play adds the dimension of perspective and character's point of view "come to life". This is the way to captivate and influence by having an impact. Theater is certainly the vehicle. A profound experience through theater can be transformational. By working with actors and seeing Broadway from an insider's perspective, and then bringing students to lunch at Planet Hollywood (of which our students can only dream as it is an inaccessible luxury), followed by a theater experience, the message is that they are worthy and deserving of the arts. I wish Broadway was not the luxury and dream it has become. It is a metaphor for the American experience and how wonderful it would be for that metaphor to come to life!

Our students' world is one of television, of pop culture; imagine the possibilities and doors that are opened through a Broadway theater experience. It cannot be described to convey any understanding. Broadway must be experienced so that children realize its impact and value theater. How else do we build the audience of tomorrow and the sponsors who, once they have succeeded, know to give back to others! We speak of bringing literature and point of view to our students. What better way than to bring them to the theater in order to go beyond lifelong memory, but to demonstrate the need to bring the experience to others throughout their lives. Besides, they need to hear this famous tale from another character. (There is always more than one side to a story and what a dynamic way to prove it.) The theater is a way to transcend one's limitations and transport the imagination of young minds. My project needs to purchase the workshop for students, purchase lunch for all attending, and purchase theater tickets for the show, Wicked for a matinee. Also needed is the cost of transportation to and from the school. This is a population that will only attend if transportation is provided.

Our students rely on school's initiative to bring them successfully into American culture. Broadway is a metaphor for some of the best our country has to offer, and the school has to be the guiding light to opening this whole new world of possibilities. An amazing experience can touch a child's heart and change a life, and a day working with the actors, having a beautiful lunch (message to children: You matter and deserve the best!), and attending a musical theater performance that is magical. For many it will be a once in a lifetime experience. We hope you will contribute to what will be the first of more to come so that the theater will become a priority in their lives.
