I am in a constant battle for the hearts and minds of high school students who deal with crippling generational poverty and ignorance. I teach 10th grade world literature at a Title 1 school in South Carolina. The majority of my students are minorities who read below grade level and struggle with the prescribed curriculum.

My principal will allow me to teach books not in the curriculum, but I have to find a way to procure them. My students refuse to read books like "All Quiet on the Western Front" and "Hiroshima."

I need books that will get my students attention and get them interested in the world outside of their small town. This project will get my students to care about what they are reading, and give them a chance to care about something. My students need 35 copies of A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier for our Africa unit in world literature. I have previewed the book in my classes and my students seem genuinely interested. This does not happed often, and I am looking for anything that will draw them out of their protective shell of apathy and ignorance.

With your generous donation I will be able to stimulate a classroom full of students who have not been stimulated in years. With this book I will be able to reach students that others have given up on. It may not change many students’ lives, but if I can get one student interested in reading, it will be well worth the cost.
