Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

The Era of Chalk and Talk is OVER! Students today need to visualize and internalize information in order to be successful learners. I teach a diverse group of sixth grade students who struggle with reading and writing, performing far below grade level. My school is new and small, with extremely limited resources. My students come from low income households with little parent support. Growing up in the inner city of New York is not an easy task. School is not always first on their list of things to do. Instead, far too many of my students stay home to raise little brothers and sisters and cook and clean for their parents- or rather, parent or guardian (singular).

When it comes time for school, students from this community need visual stimulation. With movies and technology today, the old school classroom is the LAST place these kids want to be. Teaching with chalk and worksheets is an outdated and unsuccessful method of teaching, or shall I say learning.

An LCD projector is an essential tool for the modern day classroom. I can stand and talk to these children until I am blue in the face- they have no interest; However, once that "magic" blue light shines on the screen, I have their ATTENTION! Technology transforms them from city kids holding the weight of the world back into students ready and EXCITED to learn. Using power point presentations to enhance lessons brings life back into the classroom. This projector also serves to accommodate different learning styles such as visual, auditory and kinesthetic learners.

My students welcome learning when it is exciting. Unfortunately, there is nothing exciting about a chalkboard. Colors, media clips, and virtually anything on the Internet will grab their attention. When I have their attention, I RUN with it and teach them the essentials of English Language Arts.
