Accelerating Readers

My students need 75 books such as "Blue Skies, French Fries" on many different reading levels. I selected fiction and non-fiction high interest books. The books I selected are from a kindergarten to a third grade reading level.

I teach a first grade inclusion classroom. Our school is a small public school in a low income area of our community. My class is made up of predominantly single parent, Caucasian families. Many of my children come from families that have to work 2 or more jobs so reading is not a priority in the home. My class has 18 children.

This particular class LOVES books. Our classroom library is in bad shape. Many of the books are older and missing pages.

We need more high interest books to keep them motivated to read. All 75 of the selected books are also on our accelerated reading program on the computer. This program assesses the children’s reading comprehension with a quick quiz based on these books. I selected a variety of high interest books on many different reading levels. We currently do not have books on all of the reading levels. All of the children would like to be able to take the tests and receive a reading certificate. They are very motivated by seeing their peers reading independently and taking the test on the computer. This gives me another measure of their reading and comprehension level as well.

Your donation will ensure that all of my children will be able to participate in this highly motivating program. We are in desperate need of new books. This donation will give us a solid base of accelerated reading books. All 75 of the books will be labeled with their reading level so this will empower the children to select a book that they feel confident reading. I am certain they will be further motivated as they see their reading level increase and are able to select harder books.
