Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Have you ever tried to read and understand while others around you are talking aloud and breaking your concentration? The students in our school face this each day in Title 1 class. Our Title 1 class provides interventions for struggling readers in grades K-4. Our school is 69% free and reduced lunch and many children come to us from single parent homes and homes where English is not the primary language. Our program provides small group instruction for children who may not receive any other help away from school.

In our school, we have three Title 1 reading groups occurring at the same time in the same room. We don't have enough space to spread out and students can have difficulty concentrating on the task at hand. Most of the students we serve are struggling readers and receive our services in order to catch up with their classmates. Some have attention difficulties and outside noise can be distracting.

In order to meet the needs of our struggling students, I am requesting sound phones that allow children to place the phone to their mouth and ear and hear the sounds and words they are reading and working with. This will allow the students to hear themselves clearly while keeping their voices to a low level and allowing others to work without distraction. Sound phones will help with all students in grades K-4. Fluency is one of the most under taught and most important of the five reading components. It is directly related to student comprehension and is correlated to the students ability to decode and comprehend grade level text. These phones, along with fluency materials, will help children work on letter sounds, sight words, and reading stories with voice, expression, speed and accuracy. All the things good readers do!

With your help, approximately 66 children will receive materials they can use on a daily basis to improve their reading ability, increase their confidence, and put them on the right track to not only becoming proficient readers, but successful students.
