Our fourth grade classroom is a highly motivated group of rural Appalachian students. Over 68% of our students come from an economically depressed environment and they look forward to coming to school to learn. They get so excited with hands-on, problem-solving activities, especially in science.

My rural students need technology skills if they are to survive and compete in 21st century. With the time constraints being placed on curricular areas, every minute of teaching counts! With my classroom it is very difficult to teach a science lesson using microscopes when there are a limited number of them available. All children need to be able to view the slides, but many have to wait in line. This uses valuable time that could be used for instruction and learning. The situation takes time away from the critical thinking and problem-solving skills that are much needed for this grade level.

Our school has recently purchased Interwrite boards for our 3rd, 4th & 5th grades. However, these didn't come with optional equipment such as a microscope. A microscope that could let all of us view slides on the Interwrite board at the same time would enhance instruction and learning, letting all those precious moments count! My students wouldn't have to wait to view slides and all of them could focus on the same concept at the same time. This would give more time to teach the critical thinking and problem-solving skills that my students need so much.

By helping to purchase a digital microscope for my students, you be helping them move ahead with 21st century technology skills. Plus you will help to create better problem-solvers, critical thinkers and scientific thinkers which are all needed in today's society.
