I teach second grade and work with a wonderful staff of devoted teachers and a principal who is very supportive. The income level of my community is low and as a result, I felt the only way to get help with this funding was to come to you. Our classes also have a high percentage of special education students who would benefit from a tool that would provide easier visual access I would like to use Elmo for reports, math demonstrations, pictures of things in science, geography, and art. Quite often when we read a story, they have no idea what something is and I usually have to describe it to them. For example, one of our stories talked about an avocado and they had no clue what that was. With Elmo, I could download examples from my computer that would clearly allow them to see what I was trying to explain.

My community is considered Appalachian and is at a distinct disadvantage when trying to complete with students who come from more prosperous areas. I would like for my students to feel that they have had a quality education and can be successful to break the current cycle of poverty.

I have been trying to improve not only my teaching, but the learning environment for my students by providing real learning experiences. I have been researching for weeks on end to find what it would take to make my room an outstanding learning environment to make learning meaningful and fun. The ELMO system is what I kept finding. Whether it be something as small as a writing sample to explore and develop, or a trip to Jamaica to study the culture of our new upcoming penpals, ELMO would show this on a big screen. Many of my students never get the chance to go beyond our small rural community, and I would like to take them on an adventure! With this tool, I can make learning more visual and less abstract for all curriculum areas. It will be easier to model with manipulatives that ALL students will be able to see! Students will be able to display their work and have meaningful interactive learning taking place! I'm so excited by the possibilities! Please help me make this become a reality for my students! The Elmo system would allow my students to be an active participant in their learning where I could be a facilitator to stretch the horizons of their world.

I know how hard it has been for my students and their families to survive on a daily basis with meeting their own daily needs, and that there is no room in their budgets to ask them for donations. In my room of 16, 11 are on the lunch program, and others could be if it weren't for their pride and wanting to feel that they are doing their share. Your help would make a difference!
