Dear Donors, I thank you for your interest in the needs of the students I will be teaching in the 2008-09 school year. For the past three years, I have committed myself to being a Literacy Specialist in one of our districts lowest preforming schools. I mentored teachers and coached them in Scientifically Based Reading Research strategies through individual conferencing, grade level learning teams and monthly professional development sessions. I am now returning to the classroom to teach first grade students. To assure my new students receive the best literacy instruction I can provide them, I am asking that you support them with an Early Literacy Learning Classroom environment where they may be emersed in literacy and learning. I know that returning to a classroom in these tough economic times in a large urban district such as mine, that classroom materials and resources are not readily available.

The students of my elementary are from diverse cultural and economic backgrounds. Within the past three years our school has been welcoming and educating Somalian families who have come to the United States from their country, where they have suffered from the effects of civil unrest. I find myself needing to become an expert in teaching English as a Second Language Learners. Add to this ELL population, Latino families and native US students who are also economically disadvantaged and who have a love and passion for learning. I feel called to teach these students and to continue my own learning, as I will begin my TESOL certification this summer taking 10 graduate credits, in preparation of engaging all of my learners.

I have learned, though various professional development opportunities and past ESL course work that English Language Learners (children native to the US and our newest arrivals to the U.S.) not only need teachers in the expertise of teaching Language Development, but also Reading. With my specialized reading background, Reading Recovery trained, K-12 Reading Endorsement, Masters in Reading and Literacy and now my course work towards my TESOL Certification in ESL, I can without a doubt say that the "know how" is there. Now the materials need to be provided to meet the needs of all of the students I will be teaching. The reading area carpet and easel will allow all students to gather as a learning community to receive explicit reading strategy instruction in the five essential components of reading; phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension. Students will work with the teacher to practice these skills in this Early Literacy Leaning Classroom are as they Think (on their own) Pair (share thoughts with a partner) Share (Share one thought the partners have come up with) their new learning in a scaffolded manner until they become independent readers and writers.

With your donation, my students will be able to focus on learning and I, their teacher, on teaching. With you support, this will be accomplished. I thank you in advance for your kind and generous donation. Together Everyone Achieves More!
