Let the Book Bugs Bite 1

My classroom library needs a wide variety of titles and book bundles, covering genres and topics such as sports, friendship, the Underground Railroad, humor, mystery, Caldecott Medal Winners, and Hispanic culture.

"Ms. D, I read all the books in the library." "You did?!" "Well, all the ones I like. The rest are boring."

This is only one example of the students that approach me because they are "bored" with the selection of books found in our classroom library. I have found that students don’t select a book based on the type of book it is, they select it because of how interesting the cover is to them. A good majority of the books in our classroom library are out of date, old, and torn making a large part of the book selection "boring." Therefore, it is difficult for me to entice my students' reading appetite if they cannot find books that interest them.

I would LOVE to entice their reading appetite by highlighting a genre a month! With each genre they will create a bug to spotlight the specific genre. It'll be great to read a horror story to them during the month of October and have all kinds of “horror bugs” decorating the classroom library. Or read to them a mystery and have “mystery bugs” crawling around in January. During April, I could encourage them to share a favorite poem they’ve read and have it personified in their “poet bug” by showing them some great poetry books!

It’ll be great for my students to approach me and say “Ms. D, check out the book I just read!” and it would be even better to hear them share the book with a fellow student! So, has a “book bug” bitten you lately?
