This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I teach 8th grade English/Language Arts. Ours is a gifted school, and includes a French Immersion program. The classes I teach are regular language arts, which means it's the students from the community that do not qualify for the gifted program.
My students love hands-on projects, projects that require creativity and artistry. The books donors would provide to us would give us the resources to link writing with art and expose students to new artists and new experiences.
The resources I need for this project are illustrated art books. These books will allow students to visualize the art of Vermeer and George Rodrigue. Vermeer is the subject of a fiction book we'll be reading, and Rodrigue is one of our state's popular artists. It will also allow for lessons in mood, tone, and theme, skills my students often have problems with.
You will make it possible for my students to enrich their writing, giving them new tools and resources to use in their writer's toolkits. It will also expose them to artists and artwork, making them more well-rounded individuals.
