Let the Author Speak!

My students need a class set of the recorded book "Angela's Ashes" read by author Frank McCourt, as well as the Homework Pack and Playaway Unit.

I teach English to 11th grade students in a small county in West Virginia. We have a large number of students who are of low socioeconomic status, yet our students are high academic achievers.

Multicultural literature is so important for students, particularly in the 11th grade, since the focus of study is American Literature. For several years, I have taught the novel Angela's Ashes because it is Irish-American literature and it gives students an idea of just how hard it was world-wide during the Depression. At the culmination of the novel unit, students create a project about Irish culture in general, the author, or the novel.

Every year, one or more students say that they would like to meet Frank McCourt and hear him tell some of his life story. If we had the Recorded Books CD recording of the novel to use in class, particularly for those students who are poor readers, what a wonderful opportunity we would have to let a Pulitzer Prize winning author speak to us! His perspective would motivate these students to create a much more powerful project than in previous years. Thus, I have created a new project that would focus on Mr. McCourt's dialect, his emotion, his writing style--his unique voice--in a way that couldn't be done without the recording. To complete our Let the Author Speak! project, my students need the cd class set of the novel recording, the homework pack, and--for those students who need time outside of the regular class period--a Playaway unit. With these resources, students will be able to feel as if they are with the author and make a connection they might not have made before.

Your help will ensure that my students are exposed to the personal perspective of a Pulitzer Prize winning author; you will make it possible for my students to be exposed to multicultural literature at its finest. This project is more important than most will realize. Students need exposure to cultures other than their own. More importantly, there are many of my students who have learning disabilities and need the additional help that the recorded books will afford. Your help would make such a difference in the lives of my students. Thank your for considering my project.
