Grades 3-5

Some stories you will remember forever! I teach 3rd grade math in a low income school (62% free and reduced lunch) in south Georgia.

Teaching math to students that are not mathematically inclined, can be difficult to say the least. Math can be boring and hard to remember when it comes to a lot of numbers and formulas. At age 8 the mind is full of imagination and wonder. Teaching math through literature using books with stories that excite and entertain can reach a whole new audience that once avoided the numbers game.

I have located 26 trade books that tell enlightening stories that incorporate math in each of them. Stories such as "How Big is a Foot" that tells of a king that ordered a bed for his wife's birthday. He measured the size of bed needed by stepping off the length and the width. He then notifies his carpenter of the size of the bed who then steps off the same measurements, only his feet are much smaller. This is a great way to introduce students to standard measurement and why it is so important to all of us.

Buy supporting this literature in math project you will be giving students a whole new vision where math is concerned. From geometry and measurement to multiplication, and fractions, students will be able to associate math with a story that will long be remembered.
