I am an English teacher in one of the lowest performing high schools in California who is constantly looking for new ways to inspire my students to read more books, especially challenging ones that will prepare them for college while keeping their interest. Like many teenagers, my students are easily bored and would often rather listen to music or go to movies, especially horror movies.

Given this interest in music and horror, I thought I could find something to incorporate their interests while also introducing them to great history, literature, and music. But what could THAT be?

Why not E.T.A. Hoffmann? A German writer from the Romantic period who wrote creepy stories AND inspired Offenbach's opera is just the solution! I know Hoffmann works because the students read one story, "The Sandman," and loved it. I'd love to expose them to more. Furthermore, with a class set of these books I can easily teach many more students to come!

My school does not have a lot of money for literature because it is not perceived as important compared to test preparation materials. But I know there are other people out there who believe that even inner city kids can read and love great classic literature. If you could fund a class set of books, I promise you that my students will benefit enormously. I can't tell you how much pleasure I get out of seeing these disenfranchised and discouraged students light up with excitement over something they've read. Hoffmann has that effect - now I just need you.
