I am the librarian for a Title I school. Our students come to us from all over the world and speak dozens of languages. Our school library provides the majority of reading materials our students have access to and it is the hub of learning at our school!

Many of our students do not have family members at home who can read to them in English. As they are developing literacy skills in English, a powerful tool to assist them is the use of audiobooks, combined with a print version of the same book. I have access to some books on CD and cassette, but I have learned that some students don't have access to CD or cassette players in the home, so they are unable to access this resource outside of school hours.

Playaways are a new format for audiobooks. They are self-contained and resemble an mp3 player in size and shape. They only require a set of earplugs to plug in and then the reader can enjoy the book. Additionally, they can be played back at different speeds, so the reader can control the speed they are listening to the book. I would like to add 13 of these audiobooks to our library collection and be able to provide earbuds to students who do not own a pair.

Your help will provide my students with the opportunity to enjoy quality literature that they may not be able to read independently. Additionally, several of the titles(Magyk, The Homework Machine, and The Fairy-Tale Detectives) have been nominated for our state readers' choice award, and having these titles available in Playaway format will enable students to participate in the process of choosing the winner of this award.
