Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am the school librarian at a kindergarten through fifth grade elementary school in an impoverished community. We have a hard working staff that is committed to helping our children succeed academically. Our children have spent this entire school year preparing for the Pennsylvania System of School Assessment exam. I applaud them for their patience and diligence during the entire process.

In preparing for this exam, most of our students learned how to put together a well organized essay. However, they have only had experience writing essays for this exam, but not much beyond that. They need to be able to write essays and reports on topics that have real meaning to them. Unfortunately, our library is extremely lacking--particularly in the nonfiction section.

Our students enjoy reading biographies. I think my students would enjoy writing reports on people they truly find interesting. That is why I am requesting biographies on people such as Amelia Earhart, Malcolm X , Martin Luther King Jr., and Sojourner Truth. They would be able to put their writing skills into context with a topic that has real meaning to them. This would allow their writing skills to blossom even more.

With your donation, my students will not only be able to learn something meaningful to them, they'll also be able to apply their writing skills to real life and not just "a test." Most importantly, their potential to become lifelong learners can only increase tenfold. This is my goal as the school librarian.
