Hello. I am a first year counselor for the deaf and hard of hearing. I service students in the K-12 grades. This is the first year students have received counseling services at this site. One of my goals as a counselor is to provide students with excellent counseling opportunities.

Since this is the first year this school has had a counselor for the deaf, resources and materials are very limited. In order for me to accomplish providing excellent counseling opportunities I have decided to establish what I call Project Reach. Project Reach is so titled because this is exactly what I want to do, I want to REACH the students. The majority of our students are born to hearing parents that do not sign. This impacts them in a variety of ways. Many of the students come to school severely language delayed and underexposed to life lessons that most hearing parents pass on to their hearing children. Due to the lack of communication in the home, there is a direct impact on how students behave socially, behaviorally, and emotionally. I wish to reach the students at these three levels and beyond by educating them on the possible dangers that exist with teenage dating and social events where drugs and alcohol may be present.

There is vital information in the world that many of our students are not receiving at home or in the classroom. My students need one copy of "What Every Kid Must Know About Drugs, Alcohol, and Tobacco" as well as "Drugs, Alcohol, and Tobacco" Situation Cards. We also need the "Facts on Drugs" CD-ROM, one "Effects of Drugs, Dangers of Drugs" Flip Chart, and a "Teens, Sex, Sexually Transmitted Infections, and Sexually Transmitted Infections" Poster. Our students, especially the teenagers I work with, are like any other student. They hear rumors, gossip, and myths related to these topics and they are ill informed. Sometimes the information they receive places them at great risk and they may make decisions they may not have made if they had all the facts and a clear understanding about the above topics. I feel the resources I have requested will provide the kind of visual images, group activities, and general facts needed in order to equip them with enough information to make safer decisions.

Your help in this project will ensure that my students receive the information they are lacking. Your help will also make it possible for my students to have access to information they greatly need.
