Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I work in a school that is relatively new for our district, however, the fact that I teach preschool, and not elementary school, makes me feel a bit like one of the ugly step-sisters in Cinderella. While my students feed into our primary school, we in no way enjoy the same perks or budget of our neighboring parent, so I strive to create opportunities for my students that they might not otherwise have.

In a pre-K classroom, flexibility is a must. I rarely sit in one place for very long unless it is story time or naptime, because I am constantly moving around the room, stopping to share a table with a struggling student here, or finding a bit of carpet to take advantage of a teachable moment there. A laptop computer would be the ultimate teaching tool that I could take anywhere in the classroom. Its portable nature would allow for my necessary movement and flexibility.

With a laptop, I will be able to make abstract concepts come to life in math, science and art, from any place in the room. With training, my students will be able to use it by themselves to play educational games at their own seats and my paraprofessionals can use it with the children when they lead small group instruction too. Having a laptop in my classroom will not only help me engage my diverse community of little ones, but it will also serve as a much needed additional DVD player, as well.

I hope I have helped you to see how much this proposal will add to my classroom and my teaching. This laptop will not simply be a wonderful tool to help me reach students wherever they are, but a piece of technology that would otherwise be inaccessible to these low-income learners. Please help me to help these children – they truly deserve it.
