My twenty-seven sixth graders love to read and each day they spend time both at school and at home getting lost in their independent reading books. They are a very diverse group with many first generation immigrant students and also a few who live in the local homeless shelter.
Although my students are becoming passionate readers, they are also becoming typical adolescents with a hunger for peer-to-peer interactions. In order to combine their love of reading with their strong desires to interact with their peers, I would like to run Literature Circles, a classroom version of adult book clubs. The problem? We don't have the books we need to run these student centered groups.
We need small group sets of high-interest books that include fantasy, realistic fiction, and sports novels. These books will give my students rich reading material for their Literature Circles. By reading and discussing these books they will answer important, big questions like: How can I be a good friend? What does it mean to be brave? And, what kind of person do I want to become as I grow-up?
Your support will make it possible for my students to amplify their love of reading by sharing their responses to great books with one another. This project will go far in helping me work towards one of my year-long goals of creating a class of habitual, responsive, critical readers.
