Grades 3-5

As an elementary Theatre Arts teacher, I introduce over 600 K-5 Texan students to the magical world of theatre, where creativity and imagination are the starting points. It's a place to explore being someone or something else. How do they move, feel, and sound? What are props, costumes, and sets? Why do they call it downstage and upstage? Where are stage right and stage left? How does a cat move differently from a dog? If your favorite animal could talk, what would its voice sound like? We write and perform plays, make puppets, create masks, learn to project (speak loudly) and about blocking (positioning ourselves on stage). Third grade students learn to sew by hand and on a machine, then make their own puppets. Fourth and fifth grade students study and apply stage makeup (clown, animal, bruises, etc.). They also choose plays, create characters, memorize lines and perform for younger students and their parents.

For three weeks this October, I will be a guest of the Japanese government through the Japan Fulbright Memorial Fund traveling around the country visiting schools and meeting with Japanese officials. My students are excited about my trip and are full of questions concerning how life in Japan is different from their experiences in Texas. They also want to learn to speak some Japanese so they can perform a play using some words in that language. In addition, other teachers in the school will draw on my Japan experience for their own classes. The classroom teachers, for example, will be preparing lessons in writing haiku poetry. The students will stage and perform these poems in my class.

Japan has an ancient and fascinating culture. The current anime and manga have my students interested in learning more about it. Studies have show that comparing similarities and differences help children learn using higher level thinking skills. We need books at different levels so the students can learn about Japan, the country, the culture (especially theatre) and the people. Books on the various styles of Japanese theatre can connect that with my core subject. To ensure the students learn the correct pronunciations, I need CDs and tapes. To help different style learners, I need Japanese/English dictionaries, flash cards and simple picture books. Some of the listed ones include songs. (How many of us still sing the ABC song in our heads when we alphabetize?) Since most students aren't familiar with Japanese folktales, we need books of stories. Books on haiku will help them see examples and learn about that style of poetry. There are even folktales about the Japanese haiku poet Basho. The older students could perform a play about him for the younger students that learned about Haiku.

Your contribution will bring kabuki, haiku, bunraku, Japanese folktales and the Japanese language to over 600 creative students each year. Your donation will allow me to bring back more from Japan than a slide show by giving my students the opportunity for hands-on experience of another culture through theatre. It is my plan that there will always be a Japanese module in my theatre arts classes. It will change as I build on experience from previous years, but will always provide a link from one culture to another. Thank you!
