Motivating Students To Gain Writing Confidence!

My students need 30 spiral notebooks and 7 writing activity kits to prepare students for the state assessment.

Preparing our students for great writing is essential! Helping our students become better writers will help prepare them for all that school has to offer. Writing is cross curricular and can be incorporated in all aspects of learning. I currently teach 2nd grade and have always tried to find new and exciting ways to help students become motivated to write. I heard about the new 6+1 writing traits and would love to incorporate them into my writing lessons. What I teach now seems to be a hit and miss of each writing GLCE which is why I am looking for a writing scaffolding of teaching that will build upon each other and have the students grow as writers.

When we saw our latest MEAP scores in writing, we noticed that we can always improve, especially in the area of writing. We are trying to adopt the new 6+1 writing traits and could use the tools in our classroom to make it successful. Currently we do not have a solid writing format and would love the scaffolding lessons the 6+1 offer as well. Literacy stations usually do not hold much writing which I would love to change. Having great materials would help motivate students to write daily which would improve motivation, esteem and writing skills.

Daily writing is important. In order to do that I have noticed that keeping writers notebooks is a great tool in writing. Not only could it keep ideas, thoughts, story starters and work in progress, but it is a great way to see how our writing has changed and grown since the beginning of the year. Each of the 30 students would benefit from having one. Having the 6+1 writing traits, the foam cubes, the writing lessons for the overhead, the 16 writing skills to prepare for the state assessment, the notebooks and reproducible writing forms will also be a great reference for me to help build these lessons upon each other. Overhead writing samples and writing foam cubes will really benefit the students to see first hand the writing expectations and help generate ideas for them to write. The Best of Mailbox, Mechanics and MEAP Preparation will offer me, the teacher, a great resource to give students writing formats or even different writing genres. Always having great writing prompts will help start the minds of young writers to begin a story. The bulletin board of 6+1 would be a great visual as students can move themselves from one process to another by keeping track of where they are.

Your help could make a difference in apprehensive 2nd grade writers to become the great 3 grade writers they could be. It would help with the confidence they need to take the MEAP and know that they have all the knowledge of a great writer!
