Raise your hand if you want to sit on the floor. I teach second grade students at the oldest elementary school in the district where students often sit on the hard, uncomfortable floor for various activities.

Due to budget cuts, our custodial hours have been reduced, and the night custodian only has enough time to vacuum half the building. During school assemblies, students are required to sit on the floor in the gymnasium or the cafeteria. During math center time and while playing games students like to sit on the floor with their partners. During class meetings or while I am reading to the class, students are more engaged when they gather close together. Students will often sit on the floor while reading with a partner.

Carpet placeholders will provide a more sanitary and more comfortable place for students to sit. They will also provide a defined personal space for each child. They can be easily stored, transported, and placed where needed. They can also be easily cleaned when necessary. Having pieces with numbers and letters will provide a variety of uses for hundreds of students for many years.

With your generous help my students will have their own clean spot to sit upon. Every time we gather on the floor they will be reminded that people really do care about them.
