Mrs. R. Cambridgeport School

Cultural sensitivity starts in early childhood. I teach a combined preschool and kindergarten class with children ages 4-6. They are diverse in economic backgrounds, family makeup, academic abilities, and culture. About 1/3 of my class are from international families, yet many of my American families have diverse cultural backgrounds, as well.

When my students look at each other, they see many different faces. They are extremely interested in each other's home countries and languages. These children are not afraid to notice and talk about each other's differences, and I work hard also to help them understand the common needs and desires of people around the world--not just that we all need clothing and shelter, but also that we all enjoy eating and celebrating with our families. This point can be difficult to make truly meaningful through just discussion and books. In addition, my students very infrequently see people with disabilities and therefore have many misunderstandings about how this population also shares our needs and desires.

Although I have photos of children from around the world and books that introduce different cultures, my students need authentic, hands-on materials that will integrate the diversity of human life into their dramatic play. Multicultural clothing, food, and instruments will honor children's natural curiosity about cultures while also allowing us to explore the traditions and rituals of the world's people. Dolls with adaptive equipment--crutches, hearing aids, glasses, and a cane and seeing eye dog--will help me teach lessons that dispel stereotypes of people with disabilities, develop children's use of appropriate language, and help us to become inclusive and respectful of differently-abled people.

A 5-year-old might first look at a doll with crutches and feel sorry for it for all it can't do. However, as we learn how crutches actually enable people to be mobile and active, the doll becomes a loved, valued, and equal member of a family in our dramatic play. Sushi might look weird at first to a child used to macaroni and cheese. However, when we read a book about the diversity of food around the world, suddenly the sushi becomes a popular order in a pretend restaurant! Your generosity will provide the materials necessary to ensure that my students move beyond "just talking" about the earth's diversity and truly become a respectful world citizen.
