Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach sixth grade literacy and social studies in a low income, high needs community in New York City. My school can provide only very limited resources for our classroom teachers.
I have a small library with just a very few books of Poetry. In our Litercy classes, I spend a good amount of time teaching my kids how to write poetry. They then write their own poetry books. Unfortunately, my small library and the school's small library both have very few materials to help my students learn poetry, expand their language skills, and write.
I need different types of poetry books for my children to read so they can learn new appreciation for styles of poetry, and formulate their own ideas for expressing themselves. I will use these books to show the kids what poetry looks like, that poems can be fun and what they sound like. I have 25 kids that are excited about writing poetry and eager to get their hands on books about poetry. These books would serve as a great resource for all of my children. I am asking for books by Shel Silverstein, Jack Prelutsky, Bruce Lansky and other authors that I know my students would enjoy.
I believe that poetry is a great way to get even the most stubborn of kids to write. It is my experience that all kids love writing poetry because it gives them a chance to be creative and express themselves in many different ways. I appreciate you helping me give this experience to my children. Thank you.
