Ancient Egypt to the Cold War: See It with Your Own Eyes

My students need an LCD projector to create a visual and auditory experience for kids with disabilities who are struggling readers.

I am a 10th grade special education social studies teacher in a low income community. Our student population is primarily African-American and Hispanic. Seventy percent of our students receive free lunch and breakfast.

My job requires me to convince students every day that what they are learning is worth listening to. Since the majority of my students are either poor readers or non-readers, I need to supplement each social studies lesson with visuals and graphics of the topic we are studying. I am very interested in helping students to see war, disease, famine, genocide and oppression as a personal experience. Many students do not see how this relates to them even though several of our students have experienced personal loss through neighborhood and gang-related violence.

Technology is the epicenter of education today and I try to keep my students as current as possible. My students live with learning disabilities that switch the letters of words they are trying to read, speech impairments that limit their ability to communicate and emotional disturbances that affect their attention span. With an LCD projector I can illuminate a lesson on post-colonialism in Africa with this mornings BBC video news clip of Zimbabwe's election contest, or show students chunks of the ice shelf falling into the sea for next months lesson on global warming and the environment. Their notes can be transferred to a powerpoint presentation with fonts large enough for students with sight problems to see clearly.

This technology will make the difference between my students needing to participate (which they feel they don't) and wanting to participate. When my students want to learn more they will! That is my daily struggle. Can you help us place them on the right path?
