Planting the Seed for Young Readers

My students need 39 quality trade books to complement our units of study in the alphabet, numbers and counting, character building, poetry, plants, and small creatures (worms, pill bugs, fish, snails).

Ms. G Civicorps Elementary School
Oakland, CA Grades PreK-2

There is no substitute for books in the life of a child. ~ Mary Ellen Chase ~ I teach Kindergarten at a charter school in California that serves a low income, high need community. Our mission is to instill academic literacy, civic literacy, and artistic literacy in our students. I strive to create a literature-rich environment to cultivate all types of literacy and create an appreciation for reading.

In many cases, our students do not have access to quality literature at home. As a second year teacher, I've bought various books to build up my classroom library with a limited budget. To ensure that my students have fine literature to look through and read, I have also been borrowing books from other teachers and making weekly trips to the library, but it would be great if we could have literature that belongs to our classroom to compliment our units of study.

Kindergartners need quality trade books that will inspire their learning about particular topics. This literature will help encourage a desire to learn how to read, while developing young, impressionable minds!

I truly believe that quality literature fosters the desire to read and engage young minds in the subject matter I teach. Your help will ensure that my students discover that "books, to the reading child, are so much more than books -- they are dreams and knowledge, they are a future, and a past. ~ Esther Meynell
