Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

The odds are stacked against my students in many ways. Almost all are from low-income backgrounds and hail from a city infamous for violence. Many are years behind in reading ability; the majority learned English as a second language. A significant minority have a variety of processing disorders.

That being said, I have no doubt that many of these 8th grade students will beat the odds. Many know more about college than I did at their age. Furthermore, they are determined. It is that determination that motivates me to use every minute of class time as efficiently as I can, and to make science as alive, relevant, and interesting as possible to further fuel that motivation.

I use a lot of visuals from books, and do a lot of demonstrations because I've found that the students learn a lot more when they can both see and hear what they are supposed to learn. However, in a class of 32 students, the ones in the back just cannot see many of the demonstrations. Furthermore, our school does not have a color copier, and the black and white images that I can copy for them do not do them justice. I know beyond a shadow of doubt that having a document projector would greatly increase my student's ability to learn.

A document projector is a projector that does not require transparencies. It makes it possible to magnify science demonstrations and project them on a wall so all students can see. It also makes it much easier to show beautiful color pictures of galaxies, nebula, atoms, compounds, and force diagrams. I cannot express how much I believe one of these projectors would help all of my students, and even more so those those still learning English and those with processing disorders. My students are very ready to learn, and this projector would greatly facilitate that. Thank you for making it possible for them!
