I teach second grade at a school that has a large population of English Speakers Other Languages. We also have a high percentage of at risk students; over 75% of our students are on free or reduced lunch.
Have you ever wondered how you will use a certain math skill that you were taught in your everyday life? Well using literature with math concepts embedded in them will help my students find useful ways in which we use math everyday. These books will also help me introduce key vocabulary to my students. Our ESOL students are sometimes confused by vocabulary terms that are unfamiliar to them. These books will help them hear and use these in context before having to apply them to their math work.
By having these books available in my classroom I will be able to introduce math concepts and vocabulary that may be new to my students. These different stories allow students to see math in their everyday lives. They will also give them a chance to be hooked into learning about the concepts in a way that interests them.
My students love books. By using something that they love I can gain their interest into math where several of them struggle to make connections. The students will also be able to read these books off of our bookshelf and find their own connections or share their connections with their families. Having engaging, math related literature allows me to integrate subjects and show my students not only how important math is, but also how important literature can be.
