I teach 4th grade English Language Arts, Social Studies, Math and Science in a Title 1 school in South Carolina.

The purpose of reading instruction is to foster an appreciation for reading and increase the students' reading levels which is often hard since a majority of my students are below grade level in reading and often get frustrated and give up when reading. Therefore my job as their reading teacher is to find wonderful books to get them excited about reading and as a result increase their reading levels. Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing by Judy Blume is one of those exciting books. Once my class began reading Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing I was amazed by the transformation in some students. Students were eager to read and held lively discussions about what they were reading. Never before had the students asked to continue reading instruction but that's just what they did with Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing. They begged to continue reading each day. After completing the book students were enthused to find out that there were more books about Peter and Fudge as well as other books by Judy Blume. However I could not afford enough copies of these books to use as class novel studies or even to use in literature circles.

Since I borrowed Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing from another teacher who is moving I would like to obtain my own class set (28 copies) of Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing to use as a class novel study as well as the accompanying book on tape. Not only would I like to acquire a class set of Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing, but I would also like to acquire other Judy Blume books to use in literature circles. Literature circles allow small groups of students to read the same book based on interest or reading levels. Therefore I am asking for five copies each of Superfudge, Double Fudge, Fudge-A-Mania, Otherwise Known as Sheila the Great, Freckle Juice, Blubber, and Iggie’s House.

By fulfilling our need of a class set of Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing as well as various other Judy Blume books for literature circles, you are providing not only the current fourth grade students but future 4th graders with an extraordinary literary experience that can draw them to reading for life!
