Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I often hear, "Mrs. Harris, this book is too hard!" or "Mrs. Harris, this game is too easy!" Just like Goldilocks, my students are looking for the "just right" book to read and activities to work on during Literacy Centers.
I teach seventeen enthusiastic readers at a Title I school.
Fourteen of seventeen of my students are English Language Learners and speak English as a second language. My beginner readers are learning to describe the characters and setting in a text and are learning to retell a story using the key details in a story. Many of my students do not have access to books at home and some of my students have not heard of the classic fairy tales, such as The Three Little Pigs, The Three Billy Goats Gruff, and Goldilocks and the Three Bears.
This year my students will be listening to and reading The Three Little Pigs, The Three Billy Goats Gruff, and Goldilocks and the Three Bears. We are even going to see a play of these familiar stories.
My Project
My students will greatly benefit from using the Fairy Tales STEAM Kit in the Book Nook and Exploration Center during literacy center time. My students will use puppets to retell the fairy tales which will help develop both comprehension and language skills. The story wands will be utilized in small and whole group lessons to ask students to find text evidence in a story. The moods and emotion mirrors have pictures of each emotion and would benefit my ESOL students identify the feelings of each character and how they changed over time.
The STEM projects would be highly engaging and will tie both literature and science in one. My students will love making a house that can withstand the huff and the puff of the Big Bad Wolf or a bridge for the Troll.
By providing my students with highly engaging and hands-on activities and books that spark interest, my students will be building their language and literacy skills and will be sparking their creativity through STEM activities.
Students will become stronger in their comprehension skills and can apply these literacy skills to other books that they read.
