Mrs. Kearney Jefferson Middle School
Champaign, IL Grades 6-8

I co-teach 8th grade classes made up of very diversified learners in an urban setting. Special and general education students within the classes create a wide range of abilities and challenges. Motivating reluctant readers is a daily challenge.

Unmotivated by the traditional reading materials, I would like to bridge the in and out of school literacy experience with graphic novels. Graphic novels motivate students to read. They offer strong visuals for students who have difficulty visualizing, and they are permanent; students can read the novel at their own pace.

With a wide range of graphic novels to choose from, students would be able to work on language arts elements such as essay or paragraph structure and punctuation and dialog. Graphic novels also lend themselves to reading strategies such as visualizing, sequencing, inferring, and analyzing.

You will make it possible for my students to develop critical reading and language arts skills with materials that they want to use. By supplying graphic novels for my classroom, you will be motivating students to become readers for life.
