This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Can you help my 'spatially-challenged' students? I am an 8th grade teacher and math specialist in a lower-functioning middle school in an urban New Jersey district. My students have been studying a unit on solid polyhedra. They have been struggling with 'seeing' how a solid can be opened and flattened out into various 'nets' that can be used to create the solid. I brought in various boxes for them to cut apart to see different configurations for nets. We drew some nets on graph paper and cut them out and folded them - but - many students are getting 'lost' in the procedures, (drawing the nets, cutting them out, folding and taping the nets) and are losing the mathematics. I recently took an online course that showed a video of students using a building tool called 'Polydrons' to 'snap' together different configurations of shapes and then fold them to see if they actually can make prisms. I would like very much to have these in my classroom. I believe that having a concrete tool in their hands that they can 'snap' together and change out easily, will allow my students to explore their creativity, and use their math knowledge to develop their own way of thinking about the problem. And some of our more 'challenged' students need to 'touch' math in order to understand it. I was given no budget for next year - the district will take care of ordering texts, graph paper, chalk and calculators - that is it! I have requested two sets of these polydron frameworks in order to have enough of each of the pieces. They also make individual packs of just square frameworks - those would be useful, too. I would like to thank you, in advance, for taking the time to read this request.
