Seeking MORE Calculators to Show Students the Power of Tech!
My students need a classroom set of calculators in order to provide everyone the opportunity to learn how these amazing machines work! I have a set of 10 but need 30.
We use various forms of technology every day, such as Kahoot with cell phones, yet my students do not have their own calculators to use. I can only show them using emulator apps. I want to put a machine in every student's hand, so they will be proficient when they step into their exams in May.
I teach 9th and 10th grade students that have never passed a state-administered, standardized math exam, and very few of them even passed mathematics courses during middle school and early high school.
They are hand selected to work with me and my co-teachers since we know how to build their confidence and prowess with the mathematics. We use a lot of resource and online materials already in order to engage them in using what they learn without even realizing it. Then, once they see their progress, the students become much more successful in their high school careers, realizing that mathematics is not as intimidating as it seems. Each year, fewer students come to us with the advanced technology that we know is available to them for the tests, and we want to build a classroom set of the TI-84s so our students can master them before they are forced to use the online version at the end-of-course tests.
My Project
Modern mathematics is increasingly challenging for students and teachers alike. The TI-84 calculators quickly become vital assets for the students if they know how to use them well. These machines can perform many major functions that high school students encounter, including the basic operations; solving equations; graphing and comparing linear, quadratic, and exponential functions; and working with data sets, probability, and statistics. Students can also learn basic computer programming language, which provides them a modern technological advantage and allows them to explore their own creativity. In our classroom, these tools will be used daily to explore, supplement, and enrich the students' knowledge and understanding of mathematics while also developing minds that are capable of 21st century skills.
Our students are more familiar with the "sink or swim" mentality in regards to mathematics.
They are not accustomed to an all-inclusive environment that allows them the opportunity to enhance their education and be creative at the same time. We want to show them that the world of mathematics exists in every field of study. We hope they can better view the beauty of mathematics as it pertains to their aspirations.
