Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Poetry is a wonderful vehicle for teaching a multitude of language skills such as rhyming, sight words, oral language skills, and vocabulary. I teach a kindergarten class that is primarily free/reduced lunch. When looking at my classroom demographics, you would find that about 50% of my class receive speech/language services, 50% have IEP's in a variety of different domains, and 50% speak Spanish as a primary language.

The biggest challenges to reading in my classroom are phonemic awareness/rhyming skills and at-home reading exposure. I have found that for these children, poetry offers a way to break their reading down into predicable, smaller pieces. Few of the children in my class have books at home or are read to outside of school, so we are using poems to compile take-home books so the children in my class can have self-sufficient reading opportunities at home.

I have listed a variety of hands-on learning centers in this proposal that would strengthen rhyming skills, a step that will greatly aid the students in my class when decoding words in a book or poem. These centers are educational, but they are also fun - for kindergarten, that is a crucial component! I have also listed several poetry books designed to strengthen rhyming skills and sight word vocabulary. These can be used throughout the day, both at reading time and during other subjects - this will allow students to receive much more comprehensive exposure to poetry and language learning during our school day.

Your donation will make it possible for my students to feel capable and confident when rhyming and reading. I cannot stress enough how much every opportunity provided to these children improves their chance for success. Please help me to provide them with opportunities to grow and excel!
