My students need 13 copies of biography books of contemporary artists, athletes, actors, and actresses whose lives are of interest to my students.

I am a librarian in an inner city Title I school located in an economically deprived section of major metropolitan area. The entire student body receives free lunch via Title I funding. As the librarian, I service the entire school population, Headstart through grade five.

My students have often written biographies about contemporary artists, athletes, actors,“superstars” and their lives, lifestyles and experiences. These larger than life individuals are the role models that my students idolize. My students’ reports always includes the struggles, disappointments, hard work and obstacles these artists experienced en route to their superstar status.

The message effectively delivered in these reports is anything worth having requires hard work, sacrifice and commitment. These biographies and their message reinforce what we, the educators, try to impress upon our students----success is the fruit of hard work and sacrifice. Information about these celebrities will continue to inspire and encourage students. It will also provide factual information beyond the “glitz and glamor” of the celebrities’ lifestyles. Our library has limited books and dated encyclopedias that do not include the contemporary celebrities my students admire. It is my desire to provide a generous selection of books that provide students with factual information about their person(s) of choice. The biographical reports, in tandem with my students’ interest in writing about these personalities, motivated me to find sponsors to make the library’s need a reality.

Your generosity may very well be the spring board for inspiring my students to pursue a career as a reporter or anchorperson or perhaps a performer such as one of the many they idolize.
