¡En español por favor! We learn to communicate using the Spanish language. My classes include Freshman, Sophomore and Junior students. Our magnet high school is in urban Pennsylvania.

Don't think this is the language classroom you had when you were in school... Our students use Spanish (not just learn the grammar)! We strive to have the students speak in authentic conversations. Unfortunately, right now, because of class time limits, I have to select a limited number of students to act out a scene; therefore, I only give those individuals a grade for their conversations. We all love to talk and be heard, but with 30+ students in one Spanish class, it’s hard for everyone to get equal attention.

Digital voice recorders will allow me to hear all of my students. Our neighboring suburban school teachers already use this technology to assess all of their students’ conversations. World language departments have been using digital voice recorders to successfully assess students’ conversations. This is how it works: I give them a situation (i.e. you are at a restaurant and want to order food), the pair has a couple of minutes to prepare, and then they record their conversation. I then download the conversations into my computer and listen to them later and provide feedback using a rubric. Some teachers also play recordings for the class the next day, so the class can comment on the conversations. It is a great way for my students to receive helpful feedback from others, and for me to assess their speaking skills. In order for us to do this, we need 17 digital voice recorders (one for each pair of students).
