Writing for Success in Science

My students need report covers, a case of copy paper, and a heavy-duty hole punch.

Ms. M.
Grades 6-8

Writing skills are one of the most critical skills students need to succeed in the workforce. My seventh grade students need science writing portfolios to critique their work and see evidence of progress throughout the year. Currently, our photocopy machines do not staple or hole punch and our paper is limited. Shouldn't students have access to booklets where they can observe and quantify their progress. With a few simple supplies: covers, paper, and a hole punch, my students can create a writing resource that will help organize their ideas and be prepared to review these concepts in eighth grade (when they are tested on all middle school science concepts). Is writing only in English class? Doesn't everyone send emails, text messages, memos, etc. everyday at work? Don't our students need to be able to write about all topics, especially science? These portfolios will organize my students' writing and provide them with a valuable resource for the eighth grade. They will demonstrate to the students the growth that occurs throughout the year to motivate students for the upcoming years. Yes, these portfolios will tell them, you really are progressing and learning in school! Your contribution will make it possible for my students to learn critical organizational skills as they are able to collect their writing samples throughout the year and assess their personal progress. These skills are invaluable to adults!!
