My Students

My classroom of first graders are full of energy and love to learn. When Daily 5 comes around, and students are able to pick their literacy activity, the first one to fill up is the Listening Station. There is nothing quite like having your favorite story read aloud.

This year I have 19 wonderful 6-7 year olds that have a yearning for learning.

My students come from low poverty and have little access to books and literature. Many of my students' families work hard to provide basic needs. When my students come into my classroom, I try to provide them with a safe and welcoming environment to make them feel comfortable before we start our learning journey.

My Project

My current listening station is aging. I have a cassette tape player with one headphone jack. I do have an adapter that allows me to plug three sets of headphones in at once. When this happens, it becomes more difficult for students to hear the story, as sound quality is lost. Many of the cassette tapes are becoming older, as well, making it hard to hear the story. I am afraid, one day, my cassette player will break. We need to replace them with these iPods. At the listening station, students pick out words they know and write them down. They are able to form an opinion about the story and share their favorite part.

Many of my students do not hear the oral language at home.

There is no time for a story to be read to them, anymore. Many parents spend their time meeting basic needs. I'd like to add to the basic needs, and share oral stories with my students. Students will grow as readers by seeing the words they hear. This project is one step closer to that goal.
