Comic (Book) Relief

My students need to view the library as a source of excitement and reading as a pleasure: an extensive comic book collection is one powerful way to entice kids in and begin the experience.

Ms. R. Hillside Elementary School
Hastings On Hudson, NY Grades 3-5

I am the newly hired librarian at a suburban K-4 school and am trying to turn the neglected and outdated library from a place of dread into a palace of delight. My budget is non-existent this year because I was hired in November after it had been spent, and I really want the kids to have new and delicious books, especially the boys, whose interest in reading is less than it could be. To that end, I would like to start a comic book/graphic novel collection. (I confess to having spent long hours reading Sergeant Rock comics as a child, so this grant is written from the heart.) Besides their innate desirability as slightly forbidden fruit, comic books actually have tremendous value in enhancing literacy. Their format is very sophisticated and encourages children to develop skill in sequencing (first, middle, last) that is very predictive of good readers. Comic books may have more sophisticated language than children are usually exposed to, and the new generation of younger comic books writers create material that is particularly appropriate and still exciting and visually stimulating. The artwork itself is vivid, imaginative and of a high quality, helpful when competing with the bells and whistles of the Cartoon Network. I know from previous library work that once word gets out that you have "The Simpsons" or "Bone" or "Calvin and Hobbes" or "Babymouse," you can't keep kids away. And even if the particular comic book is not available, once I have enticed the reader into my kingdom, where the motto is "For every book a reader, for every reader a book," I can go to work convincing that child that reading can be as thrilling as a video game or a movie, offering books to tide them over until the comic book is back from circulation. I have started many a child on the path to reading for pleasure in this mildly devious way. I would like to purchase some of the material in duplicate, because a lot of the children like to form their own ad hoc reading groups of two, and again this kind of self-generated enthusiasm and peer support leads to ever better readers. I think of myself as a stealth librarian, sneaking books and reading into children's lives until they become enthusiastic, joyous readers; comic books are great “weapons” in this War for Literacy.
