Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach third grade at an elementary school serving approximately 600 students. Our school is a Title I school located in an urban setting. 75% of students at our school receive free or reduced lunch. We also have many students that live with foster parents, grandparents, and single parents. With current economic trends in California, and concerns with the state budget, our community could certainly be considered high-need. Last year, I had a vision of what I wanted the environment in my classroom to be. I felt that I already encouraged community and group work through the lessons and activities I chose for my students, but I saw that the environment of the classroom was not as conducive to this goal as it could be. I felt that a different room arrangement than what is traditionally chosen or suggested by mandated instructional programs would be of greater benefit to my students. I decided that acquiring round tables for my students to work at would create the environment I was looking for. However, a traditional round school table offers no storage for students' books; something that third graders need to have. So, I found something different. The table I am asking for is actually a unique arrangement of eight desks and a central table. When formed into a solid circle, the table maintains the function of a solid workspace for students to collaborate at. The desks also contain a small amount of storage space, making them superior to using a traditional round table for my purposes. The individual desks can also be split out when necessary for state testing. The tables allow students to share a common workspace for group work; materials such as math manipulatives can be shared more easily; and communication and collaboration are encouraged by orienting students towards each other. The two tables I already have (one received through the gracious donations of Donorschoose.org members) have been wonderful for these purposes. They also greatly increase the open space in may classroom, allowing my students more room to move and work. I am requesting this third table to complete the class set and allow all my students the benefits of working in this configuration. I strive to give my students every advantage possible. That is why I have worked to build the learning environment that I believe is best for my students. I need your help to finish this environment. Your contribution will allow me to do so and will give my students one more advantage on their journey to graduation and college.
