Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Imagine reading a novel with vivid imagery that you just need to get on paper! Now picture a class full of students without the materials to transfer the pictures in their heads to paper. It's a pretty dismal picture... colored pencils, crayons and art supplies will brighten papers and faces.
With more than 70% of the students in my building on free or reduced lunch, extra school supplies are not an option.
The majority of my sixth grade students come from disadvantaged, single parent homes. Unfortunately, many of my students don't even live with their own parents, but rather with grandparents or foster homes. Eager to learn, but often without the resources at home, many of my students spend hours at school, outside of regular school hours in the labs or with dedicated teachers willing to come in early, or stay late. With hormones racing and bodies changing, these soon to be young adults are struggling with the challenge of growing up, becoming more independent and learning who they are... all while trying to figure out what class to go to and how to open up that dang locker!
My Project
My students will be able to integrate left brain activity with right brain activity to ensure whole brain activity with the colored pencils, crayons, scissors, and other art supplies. Students need to draw and color, especially in middle school. My students will be able to create masterpieces tied to rich novels to extend comprehension. The ability to create pictures in our heads does not always come naturally. Sometimes it is necessary to model imagery to help students create images in their brains as they read. Reading a book without imagery is like watching a movie without pictures. The materials requested including the colored pencils, crayons, tape, sharpeners and other art supplies will help my students bring their work to life.
This project will make a difference in the lives of my students.
They will be able to connect to their readings, thus improve comprehension. Without comprehension of what is being read, what is the purpose of reading?
