Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Cakes, breads, and cookies overflow the shelves in our local bakeries. I am looking to engage my curious students with a social studies bakery unit focused on bakeries from around the world. I teach a kindergarten class in a low-income school in which 1/3 of the students have special needs.

Having a birthday is a big event in a kindergartener's life. My students wonder, "Where do birthday cakes come from?" "Who makes them?" "How are they made?" In our neighborhood there is a rich array of bakeries from around the world that I would like my students to explore.

To complement the baking study I want my students to read and research bakery books to find answers to their wonderings. Presently my classroom library does not have books to support this delicious inquiry study.

Shouldn't all kindergarten students learn about the wonders of their local community? Please help my students read, research, and make personal connections with a beautiful classroom library of bakery books.
