Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Pairing with our friends in 2nd grade students will be making Pumpkin tamales, masks, and alters to better understand the traditions associated with Dia De Lost muertos, as a culminating experience, students will create their own ink skull paintings.
With two homeless shelters feeding our schools and a low socio economic moniker, students are lacking in EXPERIENCE and hands on learning experiences.
Our school is small and in that way, we are a family, we look forward to sharing this project with 2nd grade. They are bright, funny and so eager to learn - and we love helping them making connections.
My Project
My students need materials for an art project in which they will be burnishing impressions from the Styrofoam, as in "inking" them to press paper and decorate. We need two construction Paper packs, two ounces of sequins, Glitter, two Blick Printing Ink, 50 styrofoam tray, Fabrick paint set and two brayers. Students have learned about Jose Posadas art work and how it developed from printing into paintings. They will use the technique of a creating a plate out of the styrofoam board we requested. They will take the boards and coat them with white ink. Then they will lay their slate down on a the construction paper and user the burnisher to role out their painting.
The areas they drew will be left the color of the painting and the ink will be in the positive space. Using flower, glitter and fabric paint, students will finish with a 9x11 ink painting to hang at our class created alter for a model of our Mexican Americans celebrate Dia de los muertos
Jose Posado was an incredible artist using a variety of materials that my students don't currently have have access to.
I want my students to not only read about it or watch a video of it - I want them to experience art as Jose Posado did it. To get messy, and enjoy the way art encourages creativity and develops a sense of style.
